The Internet is a wonderful and exciting place to research anything. At any given time, day or night, a person can log onto the World Wide Web and become part of a global community, just behind his or her computer monitor, delving into the high speed universe of silicon and circuit boards.
One large slice of this world is the plethora of consumer products always available online. I have chosen a product that many people have in their homes today and is an essential component to a consumers prized entertainment system – speakers. Speakers are an interesting topic to research, and I have been meaning to do that research for quite some time now. It is almost ironic that an earlier English assignment was to write about a journey, and this assignment turned out to be quite the journey itself.
Speakers come in many shapes and sizes, as well as different brands and styles. I decided to start with the Web browser I use everyday, Microsoft Internet Explorer, to research this product. By typing the word speakers into the generic search engine, I came up with so many choices that I felt it would be better to search, instead, through the many brands and narrow my search down to just a few. I found only a number of brands that really appealed to me because they are well-known and respected. These brands were Sony, Bose, Pioneer and RCA Narrowing this large field down to only four brands made my research much easier and much more enjoyable. Name brands are all known for high end stereo equipment, and these seem the most reasonable in price for the everyday consumer looking for a good, affordable set of speakers.
After further research and drawing from my past experiences with every brand being considered, I determined that Bose Speakers were an excellent buy. This was the part of the search that seemed to take the most time. After getting this far, it was time to really test the limits of the Internet. How many different types of speakers can I find that are manufactured by the Bose Company? What kind of prices can I find for these products and are they the same in every site? What kind of deal can I get on these same speakers when using different search engines likeGoogle or America Online? These are all questions I posed when considering not only what the Internet has to offer but also how well I can use the internet to my advantage. I have wondered for the longest time how well I could really navigate the web and with that said, this was really a great opportunity for to test my own limits as well.
To answer my first question, I spent almost an hour simply looking for different types of Bose speakers. I found that Bose makes a speaker for almost any purpose one could need in a nice-sounding home entertainment system. The speakers ranged widely in price. Once again, I narrowed my search to make it a little easier, thinking to myself, where do I want these to go and how big should they be to fit there? My options were once again limited to only a few choice sets of speakers. After looking at my surroundings, I saw that open spaces were few and far between so I needed only a few small surround sound speakers. I am also very interested in making my movie viewing experience more enjoyable with a powerful subwoofer. These constraints helped immensely in my search for the right set of speakers.
At first, I thought nothing would have more helpful information than the official Bose Web site. That was not the case though. The Bose Web site had only a limited number of speaker offerings which really surprised me. I had learned so much so far that I started thinking that there was so much I had been missing. It was there where I found myself backtracking through my journey, trying to find the original search page. While browsing I realized that I hadnt checked E-bay, a user-to-user auction host. I had heard many stories about the site, some good and some bad. I thought I should give it a try though.
I wasnt sure what to think when going into the E-bay site, but I didnt think it would be too bad; many of my friends frequent the same site and seem to love it. By narrowing the fields down and typing in the appropriate words, I was browsing through Bose speakers in no time. There seemed to be some excellent deals on this site, and another thing that can calm the apprehensive attitudes of first time buyers, like myself, is a rating system where pervious buyers and sellers rate the response and service of the people with whom they have done business. It shows which sellers can be trusted. One thing that is a slight drawback to the site, though, is how I couldnt type in a model name or number so I was forced to browse through a seemingly endless list of I didnt necessarily want. I didnt find the exact speakers I had before, but I did find many interesting things, and my overall review of the site is positive. I decided to, once again, back up my search to my starting point.
Finally, back to my starting point, I saw an advertisement for a site that caught my eye – Microsoft Internet Explorer Shopping Network. One of the featured links on this network was a Bose speaker site. I felt this was an excellent site because of the colorful layout that held my interest in the product. I found that the site was also extremely easy to navigate and enjoyable to explore. It is in this site that I found what was seeking: the Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III Speaker System. The system met all the requirements I had set. It has two extremely small speakers and a high powered subwoofer that will fit the price range that is comfortable for me. One thing that really stuck out about this site was the abundance of information that was presented. The page provided the weight, color and dimensions of the speakers and displayed the equipment that was and wasnt included. Now, the only thing I have left to do is order and pay. All I had left to do was examine the ordering process.
After filling out the appropriate information on several pages, the speakers were almost ready to leave the warehouse and would arrive at my house within four to five business days. All that was left to do was punch in the credit card number. Ordering was fairly simple and definitely worth the time spent.
I found that this journey through the World Wide Web was informative as well as entertaining. In a matter of an hour and a half, I found the exact speakers that would fit my lifestyle and my budget. Throughout this process I began to feel more confident letting my mind wander and letting my fingers follow in suit. I now feel comfortable researching and ordering things online although Im not sure how healthy the newfound convenience will be for my pocket-book.
Now that I have completed my objective, I think it is time to see what else I can discover. I found a few things while searching that really interested me. I saw that Bose also makes great outdoor speakers, which would be great for a patio. These types of speakers dont have to be pulled inside when it is rainy or too cold outside. I also found that there is such a thing as marine speakers that are made to be installed in a boat. I am glad to have grown up during this technological age in which engineers have designed a speaker that can get wet and still not short out. I have always looked forward to an afternoon out on a lake but never before have I been able to enjoy the experience with the sweet melodies of the radio sifting through the air. I was still curious to see what else I could find when exploring further into the Internet to see what different Web browsers could offer.
My first choice was the ever popular Google. It was a fairly user friendly search engine that offered many quality sites with little hassle. I was presented a number of sites that were excellent and intriguing but none like the Microsoft Shopping Network, which can be accessed much more conveniently from the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Another big-name server I browsed was America Online. Once again, the site was easy to navigate but did not compare to my original choice. However, I did find many of the same sites I had seen before and all three search engines did so efficiently. After a brief search through other smaller search engines like Dogpile.com, Mamma.com, and Search.com, I realized I was mostly finding the same sites over and over. Nothing, however, really stuck out as any more attractive or easy to use as any other. After examining most sites, I found five speaker sets that suited my needs that had a price range being between two-hundred dollars and six-hundred dollars.
