These guidelines are adapted from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.) and reflect current APA formatting standards. . Any instructions provided by your lecturer or school take precedence over this guide.
Set margins of 2.54 cm on all sides (top, bottom, left, right).
Font size and type
Use a 12-point serif font. Times New Roman is an example of a serif font.
Double-space throughout the paper.
Align the text flush left, creating uneven right margin.
Indent the first line of each paragraph 5-7 spaces (use the tab key).
Use a header to insert page numbers in the upper right hand corner on every page of your assignment.
Headings are used to organise the document and reflect the relative importance of sections.
Main headings: Centred, boldface, uppercase and lowercase heading (title case)
Subheadings: Flush left, boldface, uppercase and lowercase heading (title case)
When a direct quotation is used, always include the author, year, and page number (or paragraph number for nonpaginated information) as part of the citation. Refer to the APA in-text citations page for examples.
A quotation of fewer than 40 words should be enclosed in quotation marks and incorporated into the formal structure of the sentence.
A lengthier quotation of 40 or more words should appear set off from the surrounding text (without quotation marks), in block format, double spaced, with each line indented 5-7 spaces (.75 cm) from the left margin.
Start your reference list on a new page.
Type the word References, centred, at the top of the page.
Double space all references.
Use a hanging indent: the first line of each entry is flush with the left margin and subsequent lines are indented.
